In St. Louis and St. Louis County, sales tax rates range from 7.1 percent to 9.1 percent — but that’s just the base rate (the dots in the chart below). After accounting for special taxing districts, the tax can be nearly 11 percent (the lines stretching off to the right). These tax rates are before the increases from April’s election go into effect.
In Madison and St. Clair counties in Illinois, the base rate ranges from 6.6 percent to 8.9 percent, with special districts raising the rate to 9.85 percent in some places.
