By the end of April last year, Missouri correctional facilities had reported 50 overdoses. This year, facilities have reported 83. Missouri prisons, which held nearly 28,000 inmates systemwide in July, have seen no fewer than 9 overdoses each month since the state Department of Corrections began collecting that data in May 2017. More than 200 people overdosed in state prisons in 2018.
