Traffic crashes killed nearly 500 pedestrians in St. Louis and St. Louis County between 1998 and 2018, the most recent year with complete data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. During this 20-year period, about one in five people killed in a traffic crash was a pedestrian. The city accounts for more than half of the total pedestrian deaths despite having about a third as many residents as St. Louis County.
