A Crowded Field

There are more than 100 pro sports stadiums in North America

5 cities have 3 stadiums within about a mile of each other

St. Louis will soon be among them (again)

Brent Jones | St. Louis Public Radio

Nov. 11, 2019

St. Louis’ new Major League Soccer stadium is planned for land just northwest of Union Station, across Market Street. When it’s complete in 2022, St. Louis will once again have three major league stadiums — Busch Stadium, Enterprise Center and the MLS stadium — all in a row, within about a mile of each other.

So we wondered, how common is that? Do other cities have “stadium districts”? Or, is it more likely that pro sports stadiums are spread apart?

To find out, we looked at the 153 teams across the five major professional sports leagues in North America — MLB, MLS, NBA, NFL and NHL. These teams play in more than 100 stadiums across 50 metro areas. About half of those metros have at least three pro sports stadiums currently built or at least planned to be constructed soon. Then, we found which three stadiums in each metro area are closest together.

The distances between them vary considerably. Philadelphia and Detroit both have three stadiums within less than a half-mile of each other. Compare that to Kansas City, where nearly 20 miles separates Sporting KC’s MLS stadium in Kansas from the two-stadium complex on the eastern edge of the city where the baseball and football teams play.

With the completion of the new MLS stadium, St. Louis will rejoin the list, in sixth position. Busch Stadium and the proposed MLS stadium are about 1.1 miles apart, with Enterprise Center almost exactly in the middle. If the St. Louis Rams were still playing in the Dome at America’s Center, the city would be fourth.

Here’s what the landscape looks like:

These are St. Louis' stadiums. From left, the planned MLS stadium, Enterprise Center and Busch Stadium.

If you draw the smallest circle possible to fit all three inside, then measure the diameter of that circle, you get 1.13 miles. That's the distance between Busch Stadium and the planned MLS stadium.

The closest set of three stadiums is in Philadelphia, where three stadiums — Wells Fargo Center, Lincoln Financial Field and Citizens Bank Park — are less than a half-mile apart.

Kansas City was second-to-last on the list, with three stadiums more than 19 miles apart.

“In terms of a recent example of a city that has made tremendous strides, Detroit has made huge strides in making these strategic decisions,” said Patrick Rishe, director of Washington University’s sports business program. “Not just their sports stadiums, but their renovated Fox Theatre … and then Wayne State University … building that right next to the brand-new Little Caesars Arena, you have all of these buildings literally within a half-mile of each other.”

How close are they in St. Louis terms?

Detroit’s three stadiums would fit between the west end of Kiener Plaza and the riverfront.

Three closest stadiums:

  • T-Mobile Park — Mariners (MLB)
  • CenturyLink Field — Sounders FC (MLS), Seahawks (NFL)
  • Seattle Center Arena (planned) — Unnamed NHL team

Seattle currently has three active major league teams playing in two stadiums. (The Seahawks and Sounders FC share CenturyLink Field.) But the city still makes our list thanks to the NHL, which has awarded Seattle an expansion team for its 2021-22 season. The team will play in the revamped Seattle Center Arena, the former home of the NBA’s Supersonics, near the Space Needle and a few miles northwest of downtown. T-Mobile Park and CenturyLink Field are on the south side of downtown.

How close are they in St. Louis terms?

T-Mobile Park and CenturyLink Field are about as close as the Arch’s legs. Seattle’s new NHL arena will be about as far away from those stadiums as it is from the I-64/40 and I-44/55 interchange south to the Anheuser-Busch Brewery.

  • Soldier Field — Bears (NFL), Fire (MLS)

Chicago has some old sports stadiums. Soldier Field, opened in 1924, is the second oldest of these 72 stadiums. Guaranteed Rate Field is the ninth oldest and United Center is the 11th oldest. Wrigley Field, not appearing on the list (it’s nearly five miles north of the United Center) is the second oldest out of the 103 currently built stadiums analyzed for this story.

How close are they in St. Louis terms?

Chicago’s closest three stadiums are about as far apart as starting at Busch Stadium and heading west on I-64/40 to Kingshighway.

  • Banc of California Stadium — Los Angeles FC (MLS)
  • Staples Center — Clippers (NBA), Lakers (NBA), Kings (NHL)

No, we don’t need to talk about the Rams. Staples Center, in downtown LA, is the only venue on the list to host three teams. Dodger Stadium is to the northeast. Opened in 1962, it’s the third oldest venue on this list. And Banc of California Stadium, opened in 2018, is southwest of downtown. It’s next door to the Coliseum, the temporary home of you-know-who.

How close are they in St. Louis terms?

The 4.9 miles between LA’s stadiums is about the same distance as starting from Busch Stadium and traveling west on I-64/40 to the Hampton Avenue exit.

San Francisco is home to the newest currently open venue on the list: Chase Center opened on Sept. 6 this year. Oracle Park, home of the Giants, and the new Chase Center are within less than a mile of each other along the Bay. Across the Bay Bridge, the Oakland Athletics plan to build a new ballpark along the waterfront near downtown Oakland.

How close are they in St. Louis terms?

Phoenix, New York and Nashville are the only three cities where an MLB stadium isn’t included in their closest three stadiums (Nashville doesn’t have an MLB team). But in Phoenix, it’s a toss-up: State Farm Stadium and Gila River Arena are next to each other to the northwest of downtown, and Talking Stick Resort Arena and Chase Field are nearly as close to each other, in downtown.

How close are they in St. Louis terms?

The 12.5 miles between Phoenix’s stadiums is about the same distance as I-70 between downtown and the airport.

  • Arrowhead Stadium — Chiefs (NFL)

You might be surprised to see Kansas City so far down on the list if you know that Kauffman Stadium and Arrowhead Stadium are right next to each other — in fact, the legs of the Arch couldn’t fit between the two buildings. Both of those stadiums were built in the 1970s in Missouri, on the east side of the metro area. Kansas City’s MLS team, Sporting Kansas City, plays at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas, nearly 20 miles west.

How close are they in St. Louis terms?

Three closest stadiums:

  • Fenway Park — Red Sox (MLB)
  • Gillette Stadium — Revolution (MLS), Patriots (NFL)
  • TD Garden — Celtics (NBA), Bruins (NHL)

Fenway Park is the oldest venue on the list, opened in 1912. Along with LA, Boston is the only city with five teams playing in its three closest stadiums, and it’s the only city with more than one of the three venues hosting multiple teams. Fenway Park and TD Garden are only a couple of miles apart. But Gillette Stadium is in Foxborough, Massachusetts, halfway to Providence, Rhode Island.

How close are they in St. Louis terms?

The 21.7 miles between Boston’s stadiums is about the same distance as starting from Busch Stadium and traveling west on I-64/40 to the Chesterfield Valley. It’s also about the same as the straight-line distance between the Arch and Valmeyer, Castlewood Park and Ellisville.
